You’ve made the awesome decision of installing that swimming pool, but have you considered the shape options for your new pool? Having an idea of what shapes are available can help you squeeze the most out of your pool’s use, and also its good looks. 

The most important thing to consider is, you guessed it: location, location, location. Knowing where you want your pool to be can have a big impact on the shape. First, it has to fit in the allocated space, and you also want to make sure the shape will accommodate the activities you plan around your pool. 

Rectangular pools are not the most cutting-edge shape, but they are one of the most common pool shapes. There’s a reason for that: They can fit in a lot of different spaces. Rectangular pools not only fit nicely in your backyard, but they are also often used in large buildings for swimming at lengths, popped onto small balconies, and even in a few penthouses. They can be created to fit in long narrow spaces, small spaces, and wide-open spaces too. 

Figure-eight pools can make a curvy little wonder in your backyard. Named after the number eight, that it so proudly represent, this pool looks like, well…a number eight. Sometimes the two circles are equal in size, others, one circle is larger than the other. The cool thing about the figure-eight pool is the natural lake feel that it offers. If we’ve got a lake, then we need a waterfall. Figure-eight pools are perfect for interesting water features. Let the creativity flow (like a waterfall).

Oval pools, because of their particular shape, require a pretty big space. This makes them perfect for large yards. If you’re looking for an oasis in your yard, this is the shape for you. Oval pools look especially good coupled with palm trees, waterfalls, and rock formations. 

You may not be familiar with the Lazy-L pool shape, but you’ve probably seen a letter L, which makes you familiar with the Lazy-L shape. The vertical section of the L is usually smaller and more narrow in width, which leaves the width in the other section. This unique shape is great for unique yard space. If your yards seems small, the Lazy-L can help you get the most out of the space you have. Lazy-L is actually a really hard worker.

Circular pools are preferred for wide-open spaces. You’ll find that most enclosed pools are circular because it’s easier to build around this shape. Enclosed pools keep dust and contaminants out of pool water, which is why many baby and kiddie-pools are circular. If you want to keep pool water clean, consider going circular. 

If you don’t want predictable, go free-form. Free-form pools are space-friendly, and easiest to customize. Just as its name suggests, you can choose any shape you want. There are usually more curves to a free-form and are definitely the most unique. Choosing a free-form pool allows you to get creative, make a one-of-a-kind pool, and get exactly what you want.
